When we buy a new Icon, we take it to Church where the priest puts it under the Oblation Table ("Agia Trapeza") for forty days.

Vaskania or Matiasma: If a person gives a compliment they may give the evil eye to the person they are complimenting. To avoid this the person that gives the compliment must pretend to spit on the other person and must say "ftou na min se matiaso" which means, "I hope I don't give you the evil eye". The person receiving the compliment should secretly say "Velona sta matia sou" meaning "Needle in your eye". To see if the evil eye has taken effect on a person, he/she must pour three drops of olive oil in a glass of water. If the oil mixes with the water then the person is said to have the evil eye. There are certain people that will get rid of the "curse" by saying a few special prayers. Many believe that to prevent the evil eye one must wear a "mataki" which is a blue charm that looks like an eye. Each person must have his/her own eye charm and cannot lend it to or borrow it from anyone.
