Clean Monday ("Kathara Deftera") and Great Lent

"Kathara Deftera" is the first day of the Great Lent Season. On this day, everyone in Greece goes on an excursion to the country where they fly kites and eat Lenten foods (octopus, shrimp, bread, olives etc.).

The first of March is customary for boys and girls on the island of Kos to wear the "marti" on their arm or on their finger to prevent them from getting sunburn. The "marti" is a bracelet (or ring) made out of white silk thread and is usually made by a newlywed woman.
