Engagement Tradition

When a man decides to marry a woman, it is customary to ask for her hand in marriage from her father. When the woman (and her father) agree to the marriage proposal, they invite the priest to bless the engagement rings. (The engagement ceremony is also included in the wedding ceremony). The engagement rings are actually the wedding bands. The priest blesses the rings and places them on the left hand of the man and woman. The bands remain on the left hand until the wedding day. During the wedding ceremony, the priest places the bands on the right hand of the bride and groom. The engagement wishes are usually "Kala Stephana" and "I Ora I kali".
